Silking a black widow spider
Spider silk is an amazing natural substance. It is flexible, elastic, and incredibly light weight, although it is exceptionally strong as well. Spider silk is three times as strong as Kevlar and five times as strong as steel. The potential applications for synthetically produced spider silk are endless. Possible uses include medical applications such as flexable artificial ligaments and tendons. It could also be used to construct protective clothing or body armor; it would be an exceptional use for this application as it is one of the toughest materials known to man. Also, spider silk is environmentally friendly because it is biodegradable and does not use any toxic or acidic processes to produce.
