The evolution of spiders has been going on for at least 400 million years, since the first true spider evolved from crab like chelicerate ancestors. Today, there are over 40,000 spider species within the diverse phylum of arthropods. Spiders are generally solitarry creatures and intolerant of one another, if housed together they will most likely kill each other. Yet, among the different species of spiders about 20 species are known to live together in colonies, these are the social spiders. Most spider live in defined environments. The limitations set by physical conditions like temperature, humidity, wind and light intensity, and also by biological factors such as type of vegitation, the food supply, competitors, and enemies. Major developments in spider evolution include the develpoment of sinnerets and silk secretion, as well as different adaptations for its use.
